Job Summary

JCS Solutions LLC (JCS) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Unix Engineer to join our dynamic IT team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Unix/Linux systems administration, a keen understanding of network and security principles, and the ability to solve complex technical problems. Responsibilities include maintaining and optimizing our Unix-based systems to ensure high availability, performance, and security.


The Unix Engineer will act as an escalation point for support cases and works directly with both team leadership and federal technical leads to ensure timely resolution of support requests and other matters. Responsibilities:
The specific duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
  • Design, development, and integration of hardware and software to support Unix environments with virtualization including RedHat, CentOS, and SPARC Solaris Computer and data security, including encryption and anti-virus updates.
  • Perform a variety of engineering and operational related assignments associated with SAN, NAS, and Storage operations, backup operations, and virtualization software Workstation diagnostics and repair.
  • Build UNIX/Linux servers, ensure security requirements are met, test servers/systems/software/hardware, and integrate/install them into the production environment.
  • Monitor system performance and ensure optimal system functionality.
  • Perform regular system and security audits to identify potential vulnerabilities and take corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams to design and implement Unix-based solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues, including hardware, software, and network problems.
  • Implement and manage backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously improve system performance and security.
  • Provide appropriate documentation in the ServiceNow ticketing system.
  • Gather accurate information from customers and collaborate professionally to resolve any issues and help the customer achieve their desired outcomes; prioritize, manage, and communicate on customer escalations and incidents as needed.
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Prefer at least one of the following:
    • Red Hat
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
    • CompTIA
      • Linux+ CE
      • Network+ CE
      • Security+ CE
  • ITILv4 Foundation or higher preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems (e.g., Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu).
  • Familiarity with shell scripting and automation tools (e.g., Bash, Python, Ansible).
  • Understanding of networking principles and protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM) is a plus.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as Computer Science, Information Systems, IT, or related field. A High School Diploma (or GED) coupled with an additional 6 years of relevant experience; or an Associate’s degree, coupled with an additional 4 years of relevant experience, may be substituted for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten or more years of experience related to design, development, and integration of hardware and software to support Unix environments with virtualization including RedHat, CentOS, and SPARC Solaris.
  • Ten or more years hands on experience performing a variety of engineering and operational related assignments associated with SAN, NAS and Storage operations, backup operations, and virtualization software.
  • Hands on experience writing scripts with a scripting language.
  • Five or more years’ experience in AWS, AZURE, and other Cloud environments.
  • Ten or more years building UNIX/Linux servers, ensure security requirements are met, test servers/systems/software/hardware, and integrate/install them into the production environment.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation to operate and maintain the equipment and/or software.
  • Performance monitoring and providing documentation of
  • issues and recommendations to Service Delivery.
