Job Summary
A critical career opportunity is available for a Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) Technician/Engineer supporting the AFNCR IT Services program within the NMCC. This role operates in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment supporting senior leadership and national defense operations where system availability is essential.
The selected candidate will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for the engineering, maintenance, and continuous operation of the DRSN and associated telecommunications systems across the National Capital Region. This is a full-time overnight shift position (6:00 PM – 6:00 AM) supporting 24/7 operations.

What you will do:  
  • Lead maintenance and operation of DRSN systems and sub-systems to ensure continuous 24/7 availability
  • Perform COMSEC responsibilities including operation and maintenance of cryptographic devices and configurations
  • Execute switch operations, administration, scheduled/unscheduled maintenance, fault isolation, and service restoration
  • Conduct network engineering activities including circuit installations, modifications, deactivations, and upgrades
  • Provide technical and operational support to end users and support network expansion and modernization efforts
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across hardware, software, and communication circuits
  • Monitor system performance, provide status updates, and ensure circuit availability
  • Coordinate outage response and provide estimated restoration timelines
  • Support engineering planning for telecommunications backbone systems
  • Perform continuous circuit monitoring and reporting
  • Collaborate with other work centers to maintain system reliability
  • Support testing, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting using diagnostic tools
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to meet mission requirements

What you will bring: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience, training, or certifications)
  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Active DoD TS/SCI security clearance
  • Active Security+ CE certification (or equivalent DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification)
  • Hands-on experience with installation, testing, and troubleshooting of IT communications equipment
  • Ability to work overnight shifts and support rotating schedules/standby for 24/7 coverage
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications systems, network operations, and circuit maintenance
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, mission-critical environments

  • Direct experience with the Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) in a command center environment
  • Background in Cryptographic Systems, Tech Control, C4I Systems, or Nuclear Command and Control (NC2)
  • Experience with contingency planning, exercise support, and restoration procedures
  • Strong troubleshooting and fault isolation skills
  • Familiarity with testing tools such as Tone Generators, VoIP testers, BERT testers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters
  • Experience with Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and advanced system troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic, high-stakes operational environments
